Formaldehyde (CH₂O)

Formaldehyde, also known as antinaldehyde, has good preservative properties, is a broad-spectrum preservative, and is widely used in daily chemical products such as toothpaste.


About the dangers of formaldehyde

 

For example, 1.3 dimethylhydroxymethyl dimethylpolyacetyl urea, DMDMH), imidolidinyl ourea (see Table 1) can slowly release formaldehyde. But formaldehyde is a kind of protoplasmic toxin, it has a stimulating effect on the human central nervous system and retina, has neurotoxicity on the human liver, heart muscle, lung and kidney, can induce leukemia, and has a potential carcinogenic effect.

 

The harm of formaldehyde: memory decline, growth and development deformity, sore throat, shortness of breath, chest tightness, itchy eyes,skin allergy, impaired hearing, malignant tumors, cough...

In order to avoid this harm, as early as May 2019, the (EU) 2019 / 831 amendment issued by the European Union required that the use of formaldehyde in cosmetics should be banned from June 12,2019.

 

Free formaldehyde content in the toothpaste

In March 2024, on the basis of the Technical Specification for Cosmetics Safety (2015 edition), the National Medical Products Administration of China has included the toothpaste, and the monitoring of free formaldehyde in the daily entry toothpaste is the top priority.

 

The technical specification specifies the test method in toothpaste. The first method is post-column derivative-liquid chromatography. Compared with the mass spectrometry method, this method has low requirements for operators, good parallelism, and low instrument and maintenance costs, which is the priority choice of enterprises and quality supervision departments.
